10 Things That Will Help Your Skin Treatment Results Last Longer

Joanna Bojarska
I am a professional beauty therapist and non-invasive aesthetic practitioner with an advanced knowledge of the beauty industry.
Professional treatments can give very good results — but they are only part of the process.
What you do at home, especially in the first few days after your appointment, has a direct impact on how your skin responds and how long the results will last.
This applies whether you are having a course of treatments every 10–14 days or a single treatment.
Below are the key things I go through with my clients to help them get the most out of their treatments.
1. Personalised home skincare

This is the foundation.
Using the right products, in the correct order, and suited to your skin condition is essential. During consultations, I always review your current routine and adjust it where needed.
Professional treatments work best when they are supported by consistent homecare.
2. Sun protection (preventing photoaging)

Sun exposure is one of the main causes of premature skin ageing, known as photoaging.
Photo-protection is super important all year round – yes we are fully-aware of it, but after a treatment, the skin is often more sensitive to UV, so protection is especially important.
Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily, reapply it during the day, and where possible avoid direct sun exposure or use additional protection such as a hat.
My SPF recommendations:
- Dermaquest Sheer Zinc SPF 30 (available to purchase at my beauty studio)
- Norel Dr Wilsz SPF 50 (available to purchase at my beauty studio or online)
- Norel Dr Wilsz BB Cream Spf 30 (available to purchase at my beauty studio or online)

3. Hydration

Staying well hydrated supports your skin’s natural functions.
Many ingredients used in treatments work best in a well-hydrated environment, so drinking enough water helps your skin respond better and maintain results.
Simple, but powerful: drink more water.
4. Balanced diet

What you eat can support your skin, particularly in the first few days after treatment.
A diet rich in vegetables, antioxidants, and healthy fats helps the skin recover and maintain results.
5. Supplements (where appropriate)

While supplementation should always be approached carefully, it can support skin health.
Depending on the individual, we may discuss options such as omega-3 fatty acids or collagen to support overall skin condition alongside topical treatments.
I personally use and recommend supplements from Ancient+Brave

6. Avoid heavy exercise for a few days

After treatments such as microneedling, chemical peels, or skin boosters, I recommend avoiding intense exercise for a few days.
Excess heat, sweating, and contact with equipment can affect how the skin heals.
Light activity such as walking or stretching is fine – just keep it gentle.
7. Avoid heat and chlorinated water
Saunas, steam rooms, hot environments, and swimming pools should be avoided for a few days after more advanced treatments.
These can irritate the skin and interfere with the treatment results.
8. Maintain good hygiene

After a treatment, the skin is more sensitive, so hygiene becomes more important.
Use a clean towel for your face, avoid unnecessary touching, and keep your hands clean when applying products.
9. Clean fabrics and tools

Changing your pillowcase after a treatment and washing your makeup brushes regularly helps reduce the risk of irritation or breakouts.
If possible, silk pillowcases can be beneficial as they are gentler on the skin.
10. Follow aftercare and stay consistent

Aftercare advice is always tailored to your treatment and skin condition.
Following it carefully, and maintaining consistency with your routine, will have the biggest impact on your long-term results.
Professional treatments can significantly improve the condition of your skin, but they do not work in isolation.
The combination of treatment, homecare, and daily habits is what determines how effective and long-lasting the results will be.
Because a glow that lasts?
That’s always a team effort.

What Is the Skin Barrier?
The skin barrier, often referred to as the stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of the skin. It acts as a protective shield between your body and the outside world.
You can imagine the skin barrier as a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and natural lipids (fats) act as the mortar that holds everything together. When the barrier is strong and intact, the skin looks healthy, smooth, and radiant.
However, when this barrier becomes weakened or disrupted, the skin may become:
- dry or dehydrated
- sensitive or reactive
- prone to redness
- more vulnerable to breakouts or irritation

Why Winter Weakens the Skin Barrier
During winter, several environmental factors can affect the skin barrier.
Cold outdoor temperatures combined with indoor heating can reduce the skin’s natural moisture levels. In addition, wind, lower humidity, and seasonal lifestyle changes can further challenge the skin’s ability to maintain its protective function.
Even richer winter skincare products cannot always fully compensate for these environmental stresses. As a result, by the time spring arrives, many people’s skin barriers may already be slightly compromised.
When temperatures begin to rise and humidity changes, the skin suddenly needs to adapt again. This transition period is when many people notice that their skin feels “out of balance.”

Professional Treatments That Support Skin Barrier Repair
Professional treatments can play a very important role in helping the skin recover and regain balance.
At Beauty by Joanna, treatments are always tailored individually to each client’s skin condition and needs. When the focus is on restoring the skin barrier, I often recommend treatments that prioritise hydration, soothing ingredients, and gentle skin renewal.
Examples of treatments that can support skin barrier recovery include:
- deeply hydrating facials that replenish moisture levels
- enzyme-based treatments that gently renew the skin without disrupting the barrier
- nourishing treatments rich in peptides and antioxidants
- microneedling treatments, when appropriate, which stimulate skin regeneration and collagen production
These treatments help strengthen the skin’s natural defence mechanisms while improving overall skin quality and comfort.

Supporting Your Skin Barrier at Home
Professional treatments are most effective when combined with a consistent and supportive home skincare routine.
When focusing on skin barrier repair, I usually recommend products that contain ingredients such as:
- ceramides
- peptides
- hyaluronic acid
- panthenol (Vitamin B5)
- soothing botanical extracts
In my studio, I work with professional skincare brands that focus on skin health and scientifically developed formulations.

Nutritional Support for the Skin Barrier
While professional treatments and topical skincare play an important role in restoring the skin barrier, many clients also ask whether nutrition or supplements can support skin health. Although I am not a nutritionist or supplement specialist, research increasingly shows that certain nutrients may help support the skin from within when used alongside a healthy diet and proper skincare.
One group of nutrients that appears frequently in studies related to skin barrier health is omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are essential fats that help support the structure and function of the skin barrier. They play a role in maintaining the lipid layer of the skin, which is responsible for preventing excessive water loss and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids may help improve skin hydration, reduce inflammation, and support the skin’s natural repair processes. Because the skin barrier relies on healthy lipids to function properly, these fatty acids are often highlighted as an important component of overall skin health.
Omega-3 fatty acids are commonly found in foods such as oily fish (including salmon, sardines, and mackerel), flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts. Some people also choose to supplement with omega-3 oils, but as with any supplement, it is always advisable to seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional before starting.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time for a Skin Reset
Spring represents renewal in many aspects of life, and our skin is no exception.
By focusing on repairing and strengthening the skin barrier, you create a strong foundation for the months ahead. Healthy, balanced skin is better able to tolerate active ingredients, professional treatments, and increased sun exposure during the summer season.
Taking the time to support your skin during this transitional period can make a significant difference to its long-term health and appearance.

A Personalised Approach to Skin Health
Every person’s skin is unique, and the condition of the skin barrier can vary greatly from one client to another.
During consultations at Beauty by Joanna, I always take time to assess the skin carefully and recommend treatments and home skincare that best support each client’s individual needs.
If you feel that your skin needs a seasonal reset after winter, spring can be the perfect moment to restore balance, strengthen your skin barrier, and prepare your skin for the brighter months ahead.
If you would like support in choosing the right treatments or skincare products for your skin, you are warmly invited to book a Spring Skin Reset treatment at Beauty by Joanna. Each appointment is tailored individually to your skin’s current condition and your personal skincare goals.
If you are unsure where to start, I also offer a complimentary skincare consultation, where we can assess your skin, discuss your concerns, and create a personalised treatment and homecare plan designed specifically for you.
You can book your treatment or consultation directly through the online booking system or contact me for more information. I look forward to welcoming you to the studio and helping your skin feel refreshed, balanced, and ready for the new season.
