Joanna Bojarska
I am a professional beauty therapist and non-invasive aesthetic practitioner with an advanced knowledge of the beauty industry.
Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common (unfortunately) skin concerns I see in my beauty studio. While it isn’t harmful, it can be distressing and often impacts confidence. The good news is that with the right knowledge, consistent skincare, and professional treatments, hyperpigmentation can be managed effectively.
In this article, I will explain what hyperpigmentation is, the main causes and types, which skincare ingredients make the biggest difference, and the new professional treatments I am introducing at Beauty by Joanna Bojarska this autumn – both of them focused on treating hyperpigmentation. I will also share my top home-care recommendations to support your results in between treatments.
What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when certain areas of skin become darker than the surrounding tissue. This is caused by excess melanin production, the pigment that gives colour to our skin, hair, and eyes.
Although harmless, hyperpigmentation can feel frustrating and stubborn to treat — which is why many clients turn to a professional for tailored solutions.
Common Causes of Hyperpigmentation
The most frequent causes include:
- Sun exposure – UV rays overstimulate melanin production.
- Hormonal changes – pregnancy, contraceptives, or menopause may trigger melasma.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – often after acne, eczema, or injury.
- Ageing – leading to sun spots or age spots.
- Medication or medical conditions – sometimes affecting pigment production.
Types of Hyperpigmentation
There are three main forms:
- Sun-induced pigmentation – freckles and sunspots.
- Melasma – hormonally driven, usually symmetrical.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – left behind after inflammation or trauma.
Each type requires a tailored approach, which is why professional consultation is so important.
Key Skincare Ingredients for Pigmentation
When it comes to skincare, certain active ingredients have been proven to help:
- Vitamin C – brightens and protects against free radicals.
- Niacinamide – regulates pigment transfer.
- Alpha Arbutin – reduces excess melanin.
- Azelaic Acid – effective for both pigmentation and inflammation.
- Retinoids – stimulate cell turnover.
- Exfoliating Acids – such as glycolic and lactic acid, to remove pigmented cells.
- Liquorice Root Extract – soothes and brightens.
! And of course, daily SPF is non-negotiable. Without sun protection, even the best treatments cannot achieve lasting results.
